What is Propolis?
Propolis is a sticky, gummy and resinous material collected by honey bees from buds and the bark of trees and shrubs. The bees use this material to fill cracks, reduce openings to their hive and coat the entire inside to protect it from invasion.
Historically, propolis has been known since ancient Egyptian times. Aristotle mentions propolis in his "Story of the Animals" and considered it to be a useful remedy for wounds, infections and skin ailments.
Because propolis is sticky at normal temperatures and hard and brittle when cool it is difficult to create a useable form. We have accomplished this for you and have several products which utilize this wonderful gift of the honeybee! These include propolis gum, tincture and pure propolis.
The recognized anibiotic and antibacterial properties of propolis benefit the honey bee and perhaps us as well. Documented uses for propolis have included: violin varnish, anaesthetic and ointments for treating burns, cuts, abcesses and wounds.
