In celebration of Photography Month Sacramento, enjoy a FREE day of appreciating nature at The HIVE in Woodland! Enjoy immersive daylong workshops and activities centering around sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint.

Explore the fascinating world of bees and pollinators in our pop-up art gallery showcasing award-winning pollinator photographer, Kathy Keatley Garvey. Learn how to dye your own clothes using ingredients made by nature. Into gardening? Discover native plants and bugs with Miridae Living Labs and take home your favorite thanks to Miridae Mobile Nursery! Taste 30+ varietal honeys and an assortment of world class meads (honey wine) from across the US.

Kathy is the recipient of multiple national and international awards for writing, editing and photography. Her blog, Bug Squad is named one of the top 10 bug blogs in the world.

Don’t Toss Those Scraps! – Natural Dye Workshop

Items provided: White cloth, avocado pits, and black beans

Each year, 108 billion pounds of food is wasted in the United States, contributing to extensive environmental, economic, and societal impacts. Learn how to utilize food scraps, including avocado pits and black beans, to create one-of-a-kind shades for clothing, fabric and yarn.

Miridae Living Labs

Play with seed bombs, bugs, and plants with Miridae Living Labs!

Miridae Living Labs is a non-profit organization in the Sacramento area dedicated to using native insects and plants as tools for education, research, and community engagement. Miridae Living Labs strives to generate positive ecological changes in our communities under the guidance and leadership of community members.

 

 

 

Miridae Mobile Nursery

12pm – Container Gardening with Natives (first come first serve basis with purchase of plant)

Miridae Mobile Nursery is a customized box truck that transforms into a curbside native plant shop. Their goal is to bring people together through plants and gardening, selling a large selection of California native plants. All of the profits from Mobile Nursery sales support their science education nonprofit, Miridae Living Labs.

Observation Hive Viewing

Time: All Day

Peer into the world of bees with Sacramento Area Beekeeper’s Assocation’s (SABA) see-through observation hive. Watch honey bees in action, learn about their life cycle, and identify the queen bee. Talk to SABA beekeepers and get all your bee and hive questions answered.

The HIVE Nature Loop Scavenger Hunt

It’s spring! The bees are buzzing and the flowers are blooming. Grab a pamphlet and go on a scavenger hunt on our HIVE Nature Loop. Find all the plants, show to a team member to win a prize!

Pollinator Garden Tour

Time: 1pm

Join Rowan Boswell, one of our plant curators, on a tour through 2 acres of pollinator gardens at The HIVE! Get inspired by our oasis and outdoor courtyard, designed to meet the needs of our community and native species. Discover pollinator favorites, California natives, and drought-tolerant plants.

 

 

 

The HIVE Facility Tour

Time(s): 11am, 2pm

The HIVE has been a four-year development created to educate the public on honey, bees, and pollination. Explore our 20,000 square foot Zero Net Energy facility with scheduled guided tours. Learn how we run our operations from drum to bottle, led by Nectar Director Josh Zeldner.
