This chunky apple sauce is simple, sweet and delicious on vanilla ice cream. Every time you make an apple recipe, think about using honey rather than sugar. The honey you choose will give your apples a different flair and flavor.

Ingredients

  • 5-6 apples cored and cut into chunks (about 4 cups). We recommend tart and crisp apples like Grannie Smiths, Honey Crisp, Macintosh, or Fuji.
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1 -2 Tbsp Honey depending on how sweet the apples are (Try High Plains Sweet Clover Honey or Idaho Snowberry Honey for natural spice notes)
  • ½ c water
  • 1-2 Tbsp lemon juice depending on the tartness of the apples

Instructions

  1. Combine the apples, water, and cinnamon in a medium saucepan set over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally. Once the water begins to boil, turn the heat to low and cover for about 20 minutes.
  2. Taste the applesauce and add honey and lemon juice as needed.
  3. Stir and cook until the apples are tender.
  4. Using a potato masher, mash some of the mixture in the pan but leave some chunks of apple which makes it extra yummy.
  5. Serve immediately warm or store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
